Several successful mentors advocate the big giant calendar that notes all business activities day to day and month by month. I initially loved the idea, especially since it involved lots of colored pens!
I spent some time at the turn of the year plotting my business future for 2011, creating goals and plans, and then dutifully translating them to due dates on my giant calendar. I hung it on the wall where I could see it daily.
But, the giant calendar bombed!
The problems are strictly mine and not at all related to a very good method.
Here’s why the giant calendar doesn’t work for me.
First – I am notorious for completely underestimating the amount of time any project will take me. So, when I put on my calendar that a project will be done and ready to go on Feb 15, that day will come and go and my project will still be in process. This creates stress for me and I struggle with finding the right date.
Second – I often change my mind. My change doesn’t come from capriciousness, but from the fact that I generally learn something or reframe an idea that creates a need for change. Sometimes I just come up with a better way to do it. This means that all those greatly laid out colored notations on my giant calendar are no longer relevant. I would use a lot of correction tape if I changed everything.
I have a certain organic style to creating and meeting goals in my business. I have found that I need to have a blend between a structured path and a free flowing breeze.
As I learned more about what works well for me, I gave myself permission to kick the giant calendar to the curb. It just isn’t a method that is effective for me. Bye bye calendar.
I tell you all of this because I wonder if you are trying to make yourself do something that works well for someone else, but it really doesn’t work for you.
Do you have a ‘giant calendar’ in your life? And, are you beating yourself up because you think you should be able to make it work? Do you think that there’s something wrong with you, rather than perhaps this is a method that doesn’t fit you?
What can you safely kick to the curb because it doesn’t work for you?
Please leave a comment – I’d love to hear from you.
PS – anyone want a giant calendar for the rest of 2011?
