Just in case you don’t know, Brené Brown is a researcher who has offered some wisdom to the world in a most impactful way. And, I have embarked on becoming certified in The Daring Way™ which is a curriculum based on her extensive research into shame, vulnerability, and living Wholeheartedly.
I recently spent a week in Texas at a training with 160 other like-minded licensed helpers – everyone from social workers to clergy. It was exhilarating, exhausting, and completely filled up my professional tank.
Yes, I got to meet Brené. Yes, she is as funny and down to earth as she seems in her videos and on Oprah’s network. And, she really cares deeply how her research makes its way into the world. She cares that we do it right, that we understand and deliver the concepts correctly. She cares deeply about the fidelity of her research and its impact on the clients we serve. And, thankfully, she resists the cult of personality which could so easily form around her. ‘It’s about the research, not me’ she told us on the first, and only, day she spent with us.
Of course I did get to have my moment in the hallway with Brené (somehow she seems on a first name basis). Did I talk about my gratitude, or my professional stance, or how things were going at the training? No. I talked about dancing in my hotel room in my panties that morning to the drumming that was happening on the River Walk. I talked about jumping out of bed the night before to see what all the fire engines were doing across the street and whether I needed to put clothes on to run out of the building.
I walked away from our chat grinning and shaking my head a little bit at myself. It could have been one of those ‘what was I thinking’ forehead slapping moments, but really, it was a great example of the both of us showing up as real folks without our professionally armored selves leading the way. She laughed, told me a couple of stories about drum lines, and echoed the need to put on clothes in case of fire. We showed up as our Wholehearted selves.
And that’s what I wish for everyone I work with; to be able to show up in the world as your real, authentic, and Wholehearted self. It sounds terrific, but for many it is a difficult journey. That’s what the certification in The Daring Way™ is about – helping folks on the journey to Wholeheartedness.
I’m going to be bringing The Daring Way™ into my current work with clients. And, I’m going to share it here with you. But, if you can’t wait, I suggest you watch Brené’s TED talks. The books Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection are also worth your read. And, if you want to find a professional certified in The Daring Way™ in your neck of the woods then visit the website.
Here’s to our Wholehearted journey! And, if you had a hallway conversation with Brené Brown what would you talk about?!
